Established since 1998, Jeghier is a collaboration between 2 Indonesian architects: Komang Suardika and Anang Karna Hernadijaya. Both are graduates of Udayana University in Bali. They initially met in 1998 after both presented proposals for the same project, met and decided to work together on that project and establish the architectural consulting firm that became Jeghier Architect.
Komang is a young, acclaimed Balinese architect with a well-defined design vision and Anang Karna has extensive experience in the practicalities of building and construction. Both have the goal to make Bali as famous for its architects and architecture as it is for tourism.
According to Komang, in architecture almost any product can be utilised in a stylish fashion. Stone, wood, water, color, glass -- the success of outcome depends upon the design vision the architect has for those materials and not upon the materials themselves. Anyone can create their own style, their own mood if they are creative in how they mix materials. When a new style is created and meets with critical success, others will follow your ideas; in other words you have created a new architectural trend.
"Sometimes we need to be breaking the rules, and express your freedom and happiness in the creative process of the design. So everything flows from your own ideas, nobody can push you and nobody can squish you. But of course we don ‘t have to destroy Mother Nature. My creative imagination
always follows nature itself. I always try to develop a concept which will minimalise any impact on the environment."
"Usually it's easy to create, design and play with a large plot of land with an unlimited budget. More of a challenge is how to create something beautiful incorporating all the client's wishes on a small plot of land, with a low budget. I enjoy designing in such challenging circumstances and is the clearest statement of why a client needs an architect.
In each design I have ever produced, I have tried to make something different. When I make design here
in Bali, I always mix and blend Balinese ambience
- I don't want to be too modern nor too traditional."
Clearly an important aspect for Komang and Anang is to capture the client's personality within the form and function of their design and then to blend them with the natural characteristics and elements of the project site.
That is certainly the experience of Tropical Homes have worked closely with Jehier on a number of projects including The Residence Seminyak, Villa Onje and the Beach House at Cucukan.
